Läkare i världen is the Swedish branch of Médecins du Monde (Doctors of the World) which works to provide equal access to health care for all people both in Sweden and abroad. Médecins du Monde has existed since 1980 as an international organisation and Läkare i världen has existed since 1991. Up to now the entire organisation has an international network of 385 healthcare projects in more than 60 countries. We emphasise that access to healthcare is a fundamental human right and therefore our mission is to help and support the most vulnerable. We do this primarily by providing healthcare. Based on our mandate, we also report on violations of the right to healthcare, and highlight the obstacles facing those seeking healthcare as well as other human rights violations.

Sweden was criticised in 2006 by the United Nations for its inadequate healthcare provisions for asylum seekers and undocumented migrants, that is to say those without a residency permit in the country. This group can be seen to be one of the most marginalised in Swedish society. Läkare i världen has been running a clinic since 1995 and its work is done completely by volunteers who provide healthcare and nursing to undocumented migrants. We have a network of volunteers which consists of doctors, midwives and physiotherapists.
