About us

SWEDEN                      EUROPE                  WORLD

Doctors of the World/Médecins du Monde – is a secular and non-partisan humanitarian relief organisation. We work to improve marginalised groups’ access to healthcare. Doctors of the World bases its work on the UN international conventions on human rights, of which Sweden has ratified. These conventions state that all human beings are born free in dignity and in rights and also, that the right to health is a fundamental right for every individual. The organisations international network currently runs 185 international healthcare projects in 64 countries as well as 171 national projects in 14 countries.

The international work of DoW/MdM focuses on our four key themes. Conflicts and crises, sexual and reproductive health, harm reduction and the fight against HIV, and migrant health.

Doctors of the World have also taken upon itself to call attention to situations where rights to healthcare are violated. Further, in an effort to increase awareness of the general public and to arouse the interest of the media and the government, the organisation carries out information campaigns. By identifying and disseminating information about the underlying causes of poor health, we aim to bring about a long-term sustainable change.

Doctors of the World’s work are based largely on voluntary efforts, both in Sweden and internationally. As one of the larger humanitarian relief organisations, Doctors of the World has a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

"In the context of a worsening social and economic enviroment, MdM's programmes in France, in Europe and worldwide came under pressure in 2010. It was a year tainted by a rapid rise in poverty and health inequalities for the most vulnerable". Dr Olivier Bernard President of Doctors of the world France
