Welcome to the website of Läkare i Världen - Médecins du Monde Sweden. Läkare i Världen is the Swedish branch of the international humanitarian network of Médecins du Monde, which was founded in 1980 by Bernard Kouchner. Since our creation in 1995 we have been active at home and abroad, working on a voluntary basis to assist to those with the greatest need.

We believe that everyone has a right to medical care, regardless of their social or political circumstances. Those who live in a war or are afflicted by poverty or disasters often have a pressing, unmet need for medical care. This also holds true for those who belong to a vulnerable minority, have a drug addiction, are prostituted or live as hidden refugees. Our goal is to reach those vulnerable people that have access to no other sources of care.

The possibility to live a healthy life and the necessary social services to maintain this is a fundamental human right. We are committed to exposing and disseminating information about human rights violations where health is at stake. We need your help to carry out this task.

Médecins du Monde runs three kinds of projects - disaster relief, reconstruction and long-term development. In all cases, we strive to work in close proximity with the beneficiary populations, in order to make the projects effective and sustainable.

This site contains information about our origins, our past, present and future projects in Sweden, Niger, the Balkans, Afghanistan and St Petersburg in Russia. With the exception of the St Petersburg report, the English version of our website is less detailed than the Swedish one so please contact us if you need further information.
